NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen hinted that signing a cornerback could be on the way and he has delivered in that regard on Wednesday morning. According to Giants insider Art Stapleton of The Record in New Jersey, the Giants have signed veteran CB Maurice Canady, who was previously with the Cowboys from 2020-2021.
This is also a move that new defensive coordinator Wink Martindale will surely like too, as he and Canady will be reunited together. Canada spent more than three seasons with Baltimore between 2016-2019. Martindale was Canady’s defensive coordinator in 2018 and for part of 2019 before the CB was released by Baltimore. He was claimed off waivers by the Jets shortly after.
NY Giants sign CB Maurice Canady in wake of James Bradberry release
The signing of Canady comes a little over a week after the Giants and Schoen made the tough but necessary call to release former Pro Bowl cornerback James Bradberry. Bradberry had a cap hit of $21.8 million, which the Giants simply couldn’t have on the books. By releasing him, it created more than $10 million in cap space.
With Canady now on board, he’ll look to make a splash in camp and push the CB room for significant playing time once Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans rolls around. In 2021, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Canady played in eight games for the Cowboys. He finished the campaign with six tackles.
In his career, Canady, who opted out of 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, has appeared in 40 contests and made four starts. He has 86 total tackles to his name, plus one interception, six pass deflections and one fumble recovery. Canady isn’t known as a star defensive back by any means, but Schoen was clearly focusing on adding some veteran experience to the group for depth purposes. The GM has done just that with the Canady addition.
NY Giants also sign former Ravens CB Khalil Dorsey
Bradberry isn’t the only new cornerback that will be headed to East Rutherford, as Schoen was also able to get things done with Khalil Dorsey as well. Dorsey, an undrafted free agent who signed with the Ravens in 2020, missed the 2021 campaign due to injury. In 2020, his rookie campaign, Dorsey battled his way onto the roster and played in six matchups.
Dorsey, whose signing was announced by his agency VMG Sports, saw the majority of his time on the field in ’20 with the special teams unit. However, he’ll be hungry to make some noise for the Giants defense too. Fans are excited about these two roster moves by Schoen and understandably so.
