OTAs are rocking for the NY Giants and several guys are standing out. We don’t have to tell you that one of those players is fourth-year quarterback Daniel Jones, who is looking like a new man under head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Is this the year Jones lives up to his first-round hype?
That’s what everyone in the area is hoping for, as a big campaign from Jones could lead to a new contract. If he struggles, it’ll be lights out for him with the G-Men and the front office will likely use a first-rounder on a new QB next spring. Before that happens, though, Pro Football Focus thinks Jones could bounce back in a big way, as they’ve listed him as the team’s most underrated player.
NY Giants QB Daniel Jones will be a baller in 2022
"“The Giants overdrafted Jones at No. 6 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, but since then he has had an ugly situation around him that has only deteriorated. His box score statistics (21 touchdowns to 17 interceptions over the past two seasons) have belied better play, and had his offensive line not fallen to rack and ruin, we may have seen a player who the team had full confidence in going forward rather than a man at the last chance saloon.Jones isn’t a superstar quarterback by any means, but he has played better in a bad situation than people give him credit for. And that situation should have improved in dramatic fashion this offseason. Don’t be surprised if we see a significant bump in Jones’ PFF grade from the 70.0s into the 80.0s.”"
It’s hard to argue with PFF here. Yes, Jones has looked rough over the past two seasons, but this is a totally different squad heading into 2022. The Giants worked overtime to improve the offensive line, with Evan Neal, Jon Feliciano, Mark Glowinski and Joshua Ezeudu now over in East Rutherford making plays in the trenches.
This should help Jones have much more time in the pocket and throw the ball downfield with efficiency. Everyone knows it has been a rocky road for Jones with the Giants, but the pieces have been put into place to help him succeed this fall. It won’t be easy, but there’s plenty of folks believing in the quarterback. This includes the team over at PFF.
