Steve Smith playing pranks with Giants after Dave Gettleman departure is priceless
NY Giants fans were in for quite the surprise at OTAs, as former superstar NFL wide receiver Steve Smith was on hand. Donning a Giants shirt and hat, Smith sure looked like he was fired up to be out there with Brian Daboll and the rest of the coaching staff. Then, Smith pulled a fast one on everybody.
The ex-NFL great took to Twitter to break some news, scooping Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, saying that he was joining the NY coaching staff. People couldn’t believe it and it seemed way too good to be true. It was, as Smith was just pulling a prank and it has been confirmed by multiple reports that he isn’t going to be in East Rutherford full time.

Steve Smith isn’t joining the NY Giants coaching staff
Smith had us there for a second, but alas, he’s just in town shooting video for the NFL Network. Him being around the Giants players and coaches sure is interesting, though, as no one has forgotten about his beef with former general manager Dave Gettleman. Gettleman isn’t liked by countless people and Smith is on the list.
While Gettleman was still with the Panthers, the Carolina front office cut Smith following the 2013 season. Smith went on to sign with the Ravens and he spent three years with Baltimore. Smith wasn’t happy with Carolina deciding to part ways with him and he voiced just how much he didn’t like Gettleman. Things continued last offseason, with Smith blasting NY for not signing an ‘Alpha WR’ to help out Daniel Jones.
Now that Gettleman is out of town and Joe Schoen is running the front office, there’s new hope for the Giants and people surely are believing in this team getting back on the right track. With Schoen around too, this means that Smith has no problem making his way to OTAs and having some fun with the organization.
It’s been great to see Smith around and the players have welcomed him with open arms too. As great as it would have been to see him helping out the young receivers on a consistent basis, including Wan’Dale Robinson, that won’t be the case. Who knows, though, maybe down the road Smith would be open to signing on with the staff. As long as Gettleman isn’t around of course.
