Ranking the 10 best receivers in NY Giants history
7. WR Del Shofner
Del Shofner is not a name we often see come up when talking about the all-time great receivers of the NY Giants. This is likely due to how long ago he played. Shofner joined the Giants in the 1961 season and made an instant impact. He recorded three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, while also being selected to three Pro Bowls and three First Team All-Pro squads.
However, a combination of illness and injuries derailed Shofner’s career, as after these three seasons, Shofner would only remain in the league for four more years and would never have more than 400 receiving yards in a campaign again. Shofner would appear in the postseason three times for the Giants, catching eight passes for 110 yards in three games.
Shofner was one of the first “deep threat” receivers the league had ever seen. He was truly a game-changing player, even making the NFL’s 1960’s All Decade Team for his skillset.
In his seven-year tenure with the NY Giants, Shofner would catch 239 passes for 4,315 yards and 35 TDs. When looking back, these numbers are not the most insane stats that jump out on the page, but for his time it’s no doubt impressive. Some have argued Shofner should be a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his revolutionary play.
