When it comes to undrafted free agents, it’s always going to be easy to root for these youngsters. They’re the blue-collar guys who bust their tails to prove everyone wrong for not selecting them during the NFL Draft. For the NY Giants, there’s several players hoping to make a splash this season, including safety Yusuf Corker.
The former Kentucky Wildcats defensive back indeed didn’t hear his name called during the draft, but he signed on with the Giants and it could prove to be a brilliant decision from general Manager Joe Schoen.
With fourth-round pick Dane Belton breaking his collarbone and potentially set to miss Week 1, this has opened the door for Corker to see more reps and he’s taking full advantage of things.
Safety Yusuf Corker has a great chance of staying on with the NY Giants
In a new post, Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton dropped his list of one UDFA on each team who has the best chance to make a squad. To no surprise, he went with Corker for the G-Men and we agree with him 100 percent.
"“Following the departures of Logan Ryan and Jabrill Peppers, the New York Giants have to reload at safety,” Moton wrote. “They need depth behind Xavier McKinney and Julian Love. The Giants selected safety Dane Belton in the fourth round of the draft, but he broke his collarbone Monday. Yusuf Corker will likely battle Andrew Adams and Jarrod Wilson for the primary backup spot. The former signed with the team last week, and he’s played just 237 defensive snaps over the past two campaigns. Big Blue signed the latter after Belton went down with an injury.”"
Moton is spot on with his take. Unfortunately for Belton, he suffered his injury early on in camp and now he’s going to be sidelined for a little while.
Luckily, he shouldn’t miss the majority of the season. With that said, Corker now has a great opportunity to step into the spotlight and turn the head of new defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.
Not only that, Corker should see a ton of work in the preseason and head coach Brian Daboll will be watching closely. If Corker can play to his abilities and keep impressing, then the G-Men may have no choice but to keep him around for Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans. Should Corker record an interception or two in the preseason, you might as well lock him in for a spot.
