For anyone thinking there’s a quarterback controversy in East Rutherford, NY Giants head coach Brian Daboll will be quick to squash any kind of rumor about things. Daboll, getting ready for his first regular season with the G-Men, has said for a while now that he’s got full confidence in Daniel Jones as his starter.

However, Daboll has also been pleased with the play of veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Daboll said that Taylor could get some action with the first-team unit as soon as this Sunday going up against the Cincinnati Bengals. With that said, Daboll also emphatically said that this has nothing to do with Jones and that the former No. 6 overall pick is still his guy.

NY Giants coach Brian Daboll continues to back QB Daniel Jones

While Taylor didn’t suit up with the 1s last week going up against the New England Patriots, a game New York won 23-21, the QB looked sharp in his time going in after Jones. On the night, Taylor went 13-of-21 for 129 yards, plus a touchdown to Richie James. Throughout the offseason, Taylor has impressed the staff and done everything they’ve asked him to do.

Taylor is the kind of guy who could step in and make an impact for this offense whenever his number is called. Daboll understands that, which is why he’d have no issue going with him if Jones gets injured this season – or if he struggles. For now, though, Jones is QB1 for this team and he’s set to start this Sunday vs. the Bengals.

Jones has been quite inconsistent this summer, which has been pretty disappointing to see for Big Blue supporters. The fact of the matter is that he’s still trying to grasp the new offense being implemented by Daboll and first-year offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, who has made his way over form Kansas City.

Daboll and Co. know Jones has what it takes to lead them team to success this year, but that doesn’t mean they’re not going to give Taylor some quality reps as well moving forward. Come Sunday vs. Cincinnati at MetLife Stadium, don’t be surprised in the slightest if you see Taylor out there with the starters making some plays for the Giants. At the same time, this won’t mean that he’s getting ready to take Jones’ job, per Daboll.
