Things just keep going from bad to worse for NY Giants head coach Brian Daboll when it comes to injuries. On Wednesday at practice, with the G-Men getting ready for the joint session with the Jets on Thursday, wide receiver Collin Johnson went down with a lower leg injury and he had to be carted off the field.

That fact alone is concerning, but several NY players were around Johnson expressing just how concerned they were. This tells you that this injury is potentially on the serious side, especially since Johnson wasn’t able to walk off the field under his own power and he needed a cart to help him get inside the facility. This is a massive bummer.

NY Giants WR Collin Johnson could miss significant time

Johnson has been nothing short of impressive this summer, making strong plays both during practice and in the preseason contests. In the win over the Patriots, Johnson coughed up a fumble, but he bounced back by leading the team with his seven receptions for 82 yards. Following that showing, Daboll made it clear he had been quite impressed with the wideout.

"“The guys that have been out there and producing, Collin Johnson, David Sills, they’ve stepped their game up,” Daboll said recently. “They’re right in the mix, not just to make a team but to play. Everybody’s got to earn their job, earn their role, do a good job of the things they need to do, and make the most of their opportunities when they get them.”"

That quote from Daboll indicated Johnson looked like a lock to make the 53-man roster. Not only that, but he would have had the opportunity to be a key threat for Daniel Jones in the passing game. Now, it feels like his status for the season is a bit unknown. With the reaction from his teammates, you’d almost feel like there’s no chance he avoided a major injury.

This also impacts the roster as a whole in this case, as there had been plenty of speculation that with Johnson grabbing one of the roster spots, it would open the door for the Giants to create some cap space by cutting veteran WR Darius Slayton. The Johnson injury will of course change things for Schoen if he’s out for a long period of time.
