He’s not going anywhere. For a while, it looked like San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was going to either be traded, or released by the NFC West squad. That won’t be occuring, however, as San Francisco and Jimmy G agreed to a restructred deal to keep the veteran in town as the league’s newest highest-paid backup signal-caller.
This is a win-win for everyone, including the New York Giants. For months now, there had been plenty of speculation that Garoppolo could potentially make his way to East Rutherford to take over as the starting QB for Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka. Go ahead and put the kibosh on that idea, as this is Daniel Jones’ team and nothing is going to change that.
Daniel Jones never worried about the Jimmy Garoppolo speculation
Jones is coming off a strong preseason and training camp. Yes, there were some turnovers and yes there were some headaches, but the fourth-year quarterback improved and he has shown that he’s able to run the new offense in town. Now, though, it’s all about execution for the former No. 6 overall pick.
Things will all start come Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans. Jones really needs to start the year off with a bang. Not only him, but wide receiver Kenny Golladay will also need to put on a show to silence his countless haters out there. In order for that to happen, Jones is going to need to be on the money throwing the pigskin vs. the Titans.
Meanwhile for Garoppolo, he’ll be backing up Lance and he won’t be starting any games this season – unless Lance struggles mightily or he goes down with an injury. That’s something the Giants aren’t going to worry about, as their focus will be on Jones taking the necessary steps to try and get Big Blue into a competitive spot in 2022.
This is the last chance for Jones to prove he can be the QB of the future for New York. If he can somehow get the Giants into the postseason, he’ll surely be back in 2023. If he doesn’t play well, the Giants will certainly look to use a first-round pick on a new, exciting QB come next April. Jones can prevent that from happening by playing to his potential and impressing Daboll, Kafka and general manager Joe Schoen. Let’s see if Jones answers the call.
