New NFL Mock Draft has NY Giants sticking with Daniel Jones and taking Pac-12 CB

Has New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones played his way to a new contract from the G-Men and general manager Joe Schoen? It feels like things could be headed in that direction, as NY is 5-1 on the year and fans are already thinking about the postseason. Should that happen, Danny Dimes will be a big reason why.

During the offseason, just about every NFL Mock Draft had the Giants taking a QB in the first round. Things have changed, though. Yahoo! Sports’ Charles McDonald just dropped his early look at how things will shape out for the ’23 draft, and he has the Giants going with Utah cornerback Clark Phillips III at No. 28 overall.

NY Giants taking Clark Phillips III in the NFL Draft makes total sense

"“Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale is never going to stop being who he is as a play-caller, so here’s a cornerback to help him in his quest of being the most blitz-happy defensive coordinator in the league,” Robinson wrote on Phillips and the Giants."

Phillips is in the middle of a monster season for the Utes, who are fresh off their big-time victory over USC in Week 7. On the season thus far, Phillips has posted 16 tackles and a head-turning five interceptions, which is tied for most in the country at the FBS level. This kid is a ball-hawk and he’s made that much clear to opposing Pac-12 offenses in 2022.

Checking in at 5-10, 191 pounds, the Utah standout may not be the biggest player out there, but he’s also a fantastic tackler in addition to being a turnover machine. For the Giants, there’s no question that this team has to improve the secondary moving forward. The loss of James Bradberry has been rough for this team, as he’s now making plays for the Eagles.

Adding a player of Phillips’ caliber would surely be fantastic for head man Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. Jones continues to prove he may just be the quarterback of the future for this team. If Phillips indeed makes his way to East Rutherford, then he could be a big part of this defense for years to come too.
