This is a play that’s going to haunt the NY Giants, Daniel Jones and Marcus Johnson for a while. In the showdown with Jacksonville, drops have been a major issue for the team, with Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson, Richie James, and Johnson all having a case of some butter fingers.
The worst drop of all was Johnson’s. On 4th-and-2 from the Jacksonville three yard line, and the Giants trailing 17-13, Jones fired a perfect ball for Johnson to come down with. It was all there for Johnson to get the job done.
Had he made the catch, the Giants would have been in a prime position to take the lead. Instead, the ball fell to the turf and Jones was furious with his receiver’s mistake. Have we seen Jones this fired up before?
Daniel Jones deserves better from his NY Giants wide receivers
Jones was absolutely livid after the play and no one can blame him for that. This is the kind of drop that can change the entire game. Jones is normally a pretty relaxed guy, but he was furious. People are bashing Johnson on social media too. He’s on the field to deliver for this team, not record a total choke job.
Jones has looked sharp vs. the Jaguars, and the Giants could be in a totally different position if his receivers could simply catch the ball. Not only is it frustrating for the fourth-year signal-caller, but you know Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka are going to be upset when watching the film from this contest as well.
If anything, this just goes to show how important it is for general manager Joe Schoen to try and bring in some receiver help before the trade deadline arrives. Guys like Johnson can’t be counted on to help out Jones and this offense.
