Darius Slayton must be a focal point in the NY Giants offense moving forward
By Reese Nasser
It is safe to say that the New York Giants have been the biggest surprise of the 2022 season. Led by quarterback Daniel Jones, the team now sits at 6-1, and they’re showing no signs of slowing down. The Giants, while they have continued to win games, have been one of the most injury-plagued teams in the NFL, though. No position on this team has been more impacted by injuries than wide receiver.
Heading into the season, the wide receiver room was arguably the deepest unit on the team. Expectations were sky high with Kadarius Toney, Wan’Dale Robinson, Sterling Shepard, and Kenny Golladay set to lead the way. But instead, several of these players haven’t played in weeks.
With the lack of availability, Jones has relied on a familiar face: Darius Slayton. Slayton has once again earned a role with the Giants offense. This comes just weeks after the team seemed set on moving on from him.
During training camp, Slayton saw his role within the Giants offense disappear. After a 2021 season filled with drops and a lack of production, his days with the team were nearly over. But with his willingness to take a pay cut, and his recent production, Slayton has managed to show this front office that he deserves to be here.

NY Giants must keep feeding Darius Slayton the pigskin
Over the past three weeks, Slayton has been crucial to this team winning games, even if the stats don’t show it. He has managed to stay healthy and has played in more than 50 percent of snaps in each of these contests. In Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers, he recorded six receptions for 79 receiving yards on seven total targets.
Now, in Week 7, Slayton has once again played a large role in the Giants earning a victory. He finished the contest with three receptions for 58 receiving yards and one touchdown (epic video seen above) on six total targets. Slayton allows the Giants to open the playbook and push the ball down the field. This is something that has led to Jones relying on him heavily in the past.
That seems to be the case yet again. Throughout his career, Slayton has been inconsistent at times, but he has also shown flashes of borderline elite play. He has now gotten hot at the right time and has earned an even bigger role in the offense, even when Golladay and Toney return to the field.
Slayton must keep getting balls thrown his way. We’d love to see another big game from him this Sunday at Lumen Field against the Seahawks.
