NY Giants should try and trade for under-the-radar Denver Broncos TE

The clock is ticking for NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen to get something done before Tuesday’s Nov. 1 trade deadline. Luckily, Schoen is clearly working around said clock, making calls to other teams to try and see how he can improve the 6-1 G-Men before early next week comes and goes.

You’ve likely seen the Giants linked with several names. In particular with the Denver Broncos, Giants fans would love to see either KJ Hamler or Jerry Jeudy make the move to East Rutherford. How about a different Denver pass-catcher, though? In his latest piece for ESPN, Bill Barnwell took a look at whether or not the Giants could bring in a quality addition before the deadline.

One name Barnwell mentioned that certainly caught our attention was Denver tight end Albert Okwuegbunam. With Daniel Bellinger potentially out for the rest of the season, Okwuegbunam wouldn’t cost much in a trade and he could be the kind of under-the-radar guy who could work well under Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka.

NY Giants could end up being buyers before the NFL trade deadline

"“He was an exciting prospect heading into the season given his physical traits and 2.0 yards per route run in a limited sample as a sophomore, but he fell out of favor with the new coaching staff and has played just 16 offensive snaps since Week 4,” Barnwell wrote on the Broncos tight end. “Daboll has a well-earned reputation as a coach for getting the most out of his playmakers on offense while minimizing their limitations. Okwuegbunam’s still on a rookie contract through the end of next season, and he won’t cost much in terms of draft capital in return.”"

Okwuegbunam sure is a physical specimen, as he checks in at 6-5, 260 pounds. His 2022 stats won’t open many eyes, with him only hauling in seven balls for 50 yards. Last season, though, he posted 33 receptions for 330 yards and two touchdowns. Okwuegbunam has fallen down the depth chart this fall and he and Russell Wilson haven’t developed any chemistry.

With the Giants in serious need of TE help due to the Bellinger injury, Okwuegbunam could make his way to MetLife Stadium and help out this passing attack. He wouldn’t be an expensive option either. This week, CBS proposed a trade that would send multiple NY draft picks to Miami for tight end Mike Gesicki.

Sure, Gesicki can be a standout for this offense, but he’s also on a contract worth more than $10 million for this season. The Giants don’t have enough cap space to make something work with him, but the same can’t be said for Okwuegbunam. We love where Barnwell’s head is at with this one. Okwuegbunam could make a ton of sense for this squad.
