Hey, if you’re going to go down, you might as well go down swinging, right? That’s what an unknown general manager must have been thinking to himself on Tuesday leading up to the NFL trade deadline. For the NY Giants, the team didn’t make a move to bring in a wide receiver, but that doesn’t mean Joe Schoen wasn’t a busy man.
The Giants GM was making calls himself, and also received one asking about a top player. Schoen didn’t hesitate in saying it was a ‘hard no’ on if the G-Men would be interested in making something work. The name of that player hasn’t been revealed, but similar to so many other people out there, we’re going to guess it was Saquon Barkley.
Barkley is in the middle of an incredible year, as he’s No. 1 in the NFL with his yards from scrimmage and second behind Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns in rushing yards. Barkley is a beast and he’s here to stay in East Rutherford for the rest of the campaign… and hopefully longer.
NY Giants and Joe Schoen decided to stand pat at the trade deadine
Could you imagine the uproar from Big Blue nation if Barkley actually would have been traded? This was never going to happen, and heck, we don’t even know if the one call Schoen was referring to was even for No. 26. It could have been for Dexter Lawrence, Leonard Williams, Adoree’ Jackson or someone else.
Still, though, there’s been plenty of Barkley speculation over the last few months because he’s in the final year of his contract with the Giants. Teams like the Buccaneers, Chiefs and Bills had all been mentioned as possible destinations for the fifth-year speedster.
Luckily, though, nothing went down and Barkley will be with the Giants the rest of the way this fall and winter. The hope is that Barkley and Schoen can get on the same page contract wise, so that his stay at MetLife Stadium can be extended past this campaign.
Barkley is a special talent and the NY supporters sure are glad they’ve been able to see him bounce back in ’22. All the trade rumors can be put to rest, thankfully.
3 WRs the NY Giants could target in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft
Between a lack of depth at the position and a need for star power, the Giants could use their 2023 first-round pick on a wide receiver.
