4 reasons the NY Giants shouldn’t be taken lightly if they make the playoffs
By James Nolan
The NY Giants haven’t had a trip to the postseason since going 11-5 in 2016, with Ben McAdoo as head coach. After getting booted by the Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay Packers, the Giants spurred out after, posting a 22-59 record from 2017-2021.
Right now, the Giants are in great shape to sneak into the playoffs. Despite the loss to the Vikings on Saturday, and the team now at 8-6-1 on the year, Big Blue should still feel good about where they stand. With guys like Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones on offense, plus the defense stepping up, this squad has the potential to make noise after Week 18 comes and goes. Here’s four reasons why teams shouldn’t take them lightly should the G-Men reach the postseason.
4. The Giants defensive line is taking shape
The last few weeks, the Giants fans have been given a holiday gift of terrific performances from first-rounder Kayvon Thibodeaux, and also saw the return of Azeez Olujari (though he did suffer an ankle injury vs. Minnesota). These two have been extraordinary, as Olujari has recorded 5.5 sacks this season. As for Thibodeaux, goodness, he’s been tremendous.
The No. 5 overall pick showed up big time in the Giants most recent victory vs. Washington in Week 15. He recorded a sack for his second straight game, and he had a combined 12 tackles and three of those forced a loss of yards for Washington. He also forced a fumble, and took it upon himself to get points on the board.
New York’s defensive line also features Dexter Lawrence, who has 6.5 sacks already. PFF also has Lawrence graded as the top DL in 2022 right now. Don’t forget about Leonard Williams either.
If Williams can get back to his high level of playing, then he will be a problem for opposing offenses alongside Lawrence. In his first two seasons with the Giants he recorded over 15 sacks. He has what it takes to be an X-factor, he just has been dealing with injuries and a new defensive system. If these four can stay healthy, watch out.
