Julian Love expected contract value may be too high for the NY Giants

We don’t envy NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen, as he’s going to be working overtime this offseason in trying to make several key players happy. On the long list of guys seeking a new contract is star safety Julian Love.

Love proved to be a team leader for the defense, really helping out the young guys for defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. However, Love is an unrestricted free agent and he’s sure to receive plenty of attention if he and the Giants don’t come to terms on a new deal.

A quick look at Twitter shows that fans are split on whether or not Schoen should give him a strong deal. With Love expected to make around $8 million a year, would the G-Men be willing to pay him that much?

The NY Giants may have to let Julian Love sign elsewhere

Love started every game for the G-Men this past season, posting a career-high 124 tackles. He also added a career-high two interceptions, none bigger than his INT of Lamar Jackson in the thrilling upset win over the Baltimore Ravens early on in the season. Love made a huge play in the right spot for Martindale and Co.

Love is without question a valuable defensive back for the Giants, but Schoen has to be careful with the way he spends this offseason. Shortly after the campaign came to a close, Schoen made it clear that he’s not going to ‘shop hungry’ and he definitely won’t be overpaying. This is the right mindset.

When it comes to Love, though, Schoen needs to find a way to make him happy, while also keeping things reasonable for the salary cap. Schoen needs to get something done with Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley as soon as possible, but he can’t forget about Love either.

If Love wants to play with Big Blue next season, he may have to end up dropping his number down a bit. If he doesn’t, then we could see him playing for a different squad starting next fall.
