We know there’s two sides to the story, but right now things are not looking too great for NY Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Danny Dimes, who is about to switch agents, could be looking for around $45 million per season in his next deal from the G-Men.
Yeah, that’s not going to happen for Danny Dimes. Not only that, but insider Ryan Dunleavy has reported that things have been ‘bumpy’ between the two sides to start their talks. Well, there’s one simple solution here and Jones isn’t going to like it: he receives the franchise tag.
NY Giants should place the franchise tag on Daniel Jones for the 2023 season
As we’ve said multiple times, we’ve loved seeing the improvements from Jones over the past year. But $45 million? Get serious, dude.
With the franchise tag deadline set for March 7, the expectation is that the Giants and Jones will continue to negotiate to try and get on the same page. If they don’t, then Jones will 100 percent get tagged, which would result in him making $32.4 million for the 2023 campaign – if he doesn’t hold out that is.
All this could be avoided if Jones opens up his eyes and realizes that he’s not worth the kind of dough he’s asking for. We’re not sure who is in Jones’ ear right now, but no one who tosses for 15 touchdowns in 2022 is going to be getting such a high number. At first, a lot of people projected Jones to be getting around $33-35 million a season, which seemed fair.
Now that we’re adding $10 million to that number, plenty of Giants fans are quite furious with what they’re reading about the former No. 6 overall pick. Unless Jones brings his number way down, he won’t be getting a long-term deal and the franchise tag will be in his future. He will have no one to blame but himself.
4 RBs the NY Giants should stay away from in free agency
The Giants will be in the running back market this spring regardless of if they re-sign Saquon Barkley, and there are certain backs they should be avoiding.
