NY Giants contract talks with Daniel Jones now have a ‘glimmer of hope’
March 7 is almost here, which means it’s almost time for NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen to decide just what in the world he’s going to do with quarterback Daniel Jones. As things stand, Schoen is either going to use the non-exclusive franchise tag on Jones, resulting in $32.4 million for next campaign, or he’ll give him a new long-term deal.
For the past week, there hasn’t been a ton of optimism that a new contract would be agree upon, as Jones is apparently asking for well over $40 million a season, and the G-Men are hoping to keep things around $35 million.
However, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the two sides have been working for hours each day in attempts to meet somewhere in the middle. Per Rapoport, there’s a ‘glimmer of hope’ now that the tag will be avoided.

Giants and Daniel Jones agents are hoping to get a new contract done
This whole situation has been a bit of a mess, as countless reports and rumors have swirled from the moment the offseason arrived. However, the feeling now is that Jones and the Giants may be able to figure things out after all. This is something running back Saquon Barkley is following closely as well.
The Giants want both players back, with Schoen saying at the NFL Combine that he’s cautiously optimistic that he’ll be able to re-sign both players. If the Giants do ink Danny Dimes to his new long-term contract, then there’s a chance we could see the Giants place the franchise tag on Barkley.
Saquon himself is eyeing a long-term deal, with Schoen confirming that his offer to No. 26 during the bye week wasn’t enough for him. Multiple outlets have reported that the Giants want to pay Barkley about $12.5 million per season, but the Pro Bowl RB is looking for quite a bit more. Schoen acknowledged there’s still a gap in those conversations.
All in all, there’s still a ton of work for Schoen over the next few days. Making magic happen with Jones appears to be the GM’s top priority and rightfully so. Avoiding the tag and it’s massive cap hit ($32.4 million) for Jones is something NY fans want to see. Soon enough, everyone will have the answer they’ve been waiting for.
