4. Restructure Leonard Williams’ contract to create cap space
The biggest cap hit on the books for the Giants next season will be the one of star defensive lineman Leonard Williams. In 2023, Williams’ cap hit is an unreal $32.2 million, which is something Schoen is going to look to fix as soon as possible. The word around East Rutherford is restructuring his deal will likely get done this offseason.
Shortly after the loss to the Eagles to close the door on the 2022 campaign, Williams made it quite clear that he knew his future was a bit up in the air with the team. He even mentioned possibly taking a paycut to be back with NY next season, but then he quickly walked things back and said he’d let his agents take care of things.
If the Giants were to release Williams, the $32.2 million cap hit would be gone, but the team would also have to eat $20.2 million in dead money. This would create $12 million in cap space, but Schoen and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale don’t want to see Lenny go anywhere.
Look for things to get worked out contract wise to bring him back to keep making plays alongside Dexter Lawrence. Those two are a force up front for the NY D.
