Joe Schoen quote on QB Daniel Jones is something Giants fans will love
People in East Rutherford are still riding high after the NY Giants and Daniel Jones agreed to their four-year, $160 million deal. In his first year under the new regime, Jones had career highs in rushing touchdowns, rushing yards, completion percentage and a career low in turnovers. He has earned his payday.
With that, the new deal was a massive win for general manager Joe Schoen. After extending Jones, he was able to franchise tag Saquon Barkley keeping him in blue for at least next season. Yup, the two main faces of last year’s offense will be back together for a second year working under Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka.
For Schoen, he confirmed that things went down to the wire in the contract talks with Danny Dimes. However, now that things are locked up, the young GM is looking to the future and he has big plans for Jones and Co.
NY Giants GM Joe Schoen wants to win a Super Bowl with Daniel Jones
That’s a pretty head-turning quote from Schoen and one that’s going to fire up the fanbase. At the end of the day, Schoen wouldn’t have given Jones such a massive contract if he didn’t think he has what it takes to power this team to another Lombardi Trophy. Now, Schoen knows he must add pieces to help Jones and the rest of the offense out.
With Jones’ Year 1 cap hit around $18.5 million, it provides the team with flexibility to make moves in free agency. This squad needs a new WR1, but Schoen will also look to make improvements for the secondary and at linebacker.
Now that the dust has settled on Jones, the Giants will try to negotiate long term deals with Barkley and Dexter Lawrence as well. With a weak free agent class at wide receiver, it’s possible the Giants can look into trades for names like DeAndre Hopkins, Brandon Aiyuk or even Chris Godwin. If the Giants can’t make things work with any of those names, Schoen can get Jones some help in the NFL Draft. Perhaps they take another look at signing Odell Beckham Jr. as well?
The Giants told Jones to prove his worth last season and he certainly did that. Looking ahead to next campaign and beyond, there will be high expectations for No. 8, but Schoen has no doubts in Jones not only living up to his new deal, but potentially getting the G-Men back to Super Bowl contention as well.
