5 NY Giants first-round targets who stood out at the NFL Combine
4. Clemson LB Trenton Simpson
Out of all the linebacker prospects in this year’s draft class, there may not be a more interesting player than Trenton Simpson. He may not be considered the best in the class anymore, but he deserves his respect, especially after what he displayed at the Combine.
Simpson ran the second-fastest 40-yard dash out of all linebackers with a 4.43, while also having 25 reps on the bench press, ranking fourth amongst all players at his position. While we already knew Simpson was a strong athletic freak, these numbers just helped his case to be drafted in the first round even more.
In his last season at Clemson, Simpson racked up 68 combined tackles, and 29 stops while also allowing just 23 receptions on 36 targets for 196 yards and two touchdowns. The combination of great play in coverage and against the run is what makes Simpson such a highly-touted prospect and one the Giants may not want to miss out on.
The Giants have been without an above-average linebacker for a long time now, so bringing in a player like Simpson could be a massive game-changer for the Giants. Simpson has all of the tools to be an elite linebacker in this league, they all just need to come together and the Giants could have one of the best players in the draft on their hands if they take him.
