Now that Darren Waller is making his way to the NY Giants, life is good for head coach Brian Daboll, general manager Joe Schoen and quarterback Daniel Jones. As we’re sure you’ve seen by now, the Giants sent the No. 100 overall pick (third round) to the Raiders in exchange for Waller – a pick they received in the Kadarius Toney deal with the Chiefs.
From the second the full trade details were revealed, the narrative was set: the Giants essentially traded the controversial Toney for Waller, one of the best tight ends in the game. Toney himself saw this talk flying all over Twitter and it appears to have upset him a bit.
Kadarius Toney called out his haters on Twitter following the Giants-Darren Waller trade
That’s a subtweet if we’ve ever seen one. Toney’s time with the Giants didn’t end well at all. A first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Toney dealed with an insane amount of injuries during his time in East Rutherford. His rookie season saw him flash plenty of potential, but disciplinary issues also had people worried.
Schoen and Daboll decided to give him another chance for the ’22 campaign, as there was plenty of buzz surrounding Toney’s name leading up to Week 1. However, Toney only played a limited number of snaps early on last fall, as he once again was dealing with more injuries. Ahead of the trade deadline, Schoen decided to move on, sending the speedster to KC.
Hey, things worked out well for Toney, as he helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl over the Eagles, catching a touchdown pass and recording a historic punt return. Big Blue supporters didn’t love seeing that, but they didn’t mind the fact that it resulted in Philly heading home with the L.
Toney has seen all the negative comments about his play and inability to stay on the field in recent months, with countless NYG fans reminding him of that following the Waller trade. In the end, a fresh start has proven to be the right move for both sides. Now, Toney is a Super Bowl champ, and the Giants have landed an electric pass-catcher for Daniel Jones in Waller.
