Saquon Barkley no longer has his Giants multi-year offer in front of him
When the NY Giants and general manager Joe Schoen tried getting things done with Saquon Barkley during the 2022 season, he didn’t get the offer he was hoping for. Per multiple reports, the Giants put around $12 million per year in front of No. 26, but he rejected things. Now, Barkley is on the franchise tag and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change.
While speaking to reporters at the NFL league meetings, owner John Mara said he wants Saquon to be a Giant for life, but that there’s a limit to how much they can spend.
General manager Joe Schoen obviously wants to make Barkley happy, but he revealed on Monday that no multi-year offer is currently on the table for the star running back. Now what?
There’s no Giants offer on the table for Giants RB Saquon Barkley
"“There’s no outstanding offer right now,” Schoen said via ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. “Once we put the franchise tag on him, we stepped back. We knew throughout the negotiation that there was going to be a time where, if we couldn’t come to an agreement, we were going to go to the franchise tag, and that’s what we did.”"
Barkley is all set to make $10.1 million in 2023 while playing on the non-exclusive franchise tag. This is less than what he wants to be making. There indeed was hope that the two sides would still be able to get something done for the long haul, but Schoen and the Giants are ready to let Barkley play on the tag.
There’s some concern that Barkley could try and put some pressure on the front office. Could he end up holding out and not playing until more money is floated in front of him? No one wants to see that happen and Mara reiterated that he’s had good conversations with the speedter.
Still, though, you know Barkley can’t be too pleased about how things have gone, especially after he saw Daniel Jones get $160 million. This situation will be something to monitor all the way leading up to camp.
