The simultaneous explosions of rookies Cam Skattebo and Jaxson Dart gave the New York Giants an offensive identity for the first time in years. With one gruesome injury, that identity has been shattered.

Skattebo suffered a dislocated ankle in the second quarter of the Giants' Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Early reports indicate that the injury will likely end the rookie's season.

To carry their momentum forward, New York may look to add another player to their backfield. Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary should take on the majority of the snaps for the time being, but carrying out the season without a reliable third option would be a major risk. Nobody can replace the energy Skattebo brings, but these players could help fill out the position for the remainder of the season.

Giants' running back options after Cam Skattebo injury

Gus Edwards

Former Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers back Gus Edwards may be the most obvious available option for the Giants. The 30-year-old has plenty of experience under his belt, with 800 career carries and 30 touchdowns.

At this point in his career, the veteran is best used as a short-yardage back. In New York, he would allow Tracy and Singletary to continue in their current roles while taking on most of the work at the goal line. Edwards is currently a free agent after getting released by the Chargers over the offseason.

Jamaal Williams

Another current free agent, Jamaal Williams has already had interest around the league this season. He's not the same dominant goal-line threat he was in 2022, when he scored 17 touchdowns with the Detroit Lions, but he's still capable of contributing to an NFL offense.

Williams is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career in 2024, when he averaged just 3.4 yards per carry with the New Orleans Saints. The veteran may not be able to command significant carries for the Giants, but he's a good option to fill out the depth chart on a cheap contract.

Blake Corum

With other capable running backs still on the roster, the Giants are certainly more likely to find a replacement in free agency than via trade. But if they choose to test the trade waters before the upcoming deadline, Los Angeles Rams back Blake Corum could be the perfect fit.

The Rams may be ready to move on from Corum, as he's currently taking touches away from rookie Jarquez Hunter. The former Michigan Wolverines star is a reliable back with a downhill running style. If Los Angeles is willing to sell him for a late-round pick, the Giants should consider making the move.
