New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. had two simple tasks on Saturday afternoon: Ignore all of the outside noise and reiterate that you deserve a spot on the Week 1 roster.
Tracy didn’t need long to fail miserably at both objectives. The third-year running back had a red zone fumble near the end of the first quarter, allowing a struggling Dolphins defense to capitalize on the opportunity.
Although Tracy finished with 26 yards on six carries, he did nothing to silence the mounting questions about his long-term future with the Giants. His fumble coincided with Devin Singletary rushing for 40 yards and a touchdown, potentially pushing the latter further away from the roster bubble.
Assuming that the Giants are open to trading Tracy, it’s time to see whether the Jacksonville Jaguars could be interested.
Should the Jacksonville Jaguars trade for New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy Jr.?
With respect to the Jaguars, they need a lot of things to go right for them to win the AFC South again. Preseason expectations point to a division between Jacksonville and Houston, though we’re not ruling out Indianapolis to keep things interesting.
As for the Titans, they opted to hire Robert Saleh, overpay for Daniel Bellinger, and use their first-round pick on a receiver rather than an offensive lineman. We’d call it a bold strategy, but that’s giving Saleh too much credit.
Jacksonville needs running back depth, especially with LeQuint Allen Jr. battling a soft tissue injury. Bhayshul Tuten, a two-time All-ACC selection at Virginia Tech and a 2025 fourth-round pick, has earned considerable hype throughout the offseason. Think of him as the Jaguars’ version of Isaiah Likely, at least from the positive buzz standpoint.
The Jaguars signed ex-Washington starter Chris Rodriguez Jr. this past March and guaranteed him roughly $6.2 million. A rotation with Tracy and Rodriguez as the lead backs, similar to what Giants fans envisioned with Tracy and Cam Skattebo, sounds interesting on paper.
But if the Jaguars want to add another running back ahead of Week 1, it makes more sense to see who becomes available following final cuts. In that case, someone like Eric Gray objectively fits Jacksonville’s needs far more than Tracy.
As of Sunday morning, Tracy is expected to play in the Giants’ third and final preseason game next weekend. John Harbaugh had not yet confirmed how much the starters will play; most of the healthy starters, as well as Skattebo and Jaxson Dart, sat out the Dolphins game.
