Brian Daboll already setting Giants up to fail after Week 1 disaster

Let's do the same thing over again and expect different results.

The New York Giants offense put up six points and 231 total yards in 21-6 Week 1 loss to the Washington Commanders. That is so embarrassing. Russell Wilson looked terrible. But even knowing this team couldn't move down the field with him under center, heading into Week 2 against Dallas, head coach Brian Daboll is running it back: Wilson’s still the starter.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news Monday, confirming what many Giants fans already feared — another week of watching a 36-year-old quarterback whose time is behind him get another run because Dabs is too stubborn to make a change.

And here’s the thing: it’s not like Daboll doesn’t know. Daboll already played this game with Daniel Jones. He kept holding onto the idea that things might eventually turn around. They never did, and now, instead of learning from it, he’s looking like a coach replaying the same scenario, just with an older quarterback and a better alternative waiting in the wings. Jaxson Dart might not be a sure thing, but the decision to delay his opportunity feels a lot more like habit than strategy.

Brian Daboll won’t make the quarterback decision Giants fans want

This is so much more than just preseason hype. It’s about watching a future Hall of Fame quarterback complete 17 of 37 passes and look dejected. He looks so cooked.

This is a team that hasn't scored an opening-week touchdown in three years. The G-Men haven't looked like they’ve taken any sort of step forward in years. So Dart might not be ready for starting duties yet, but Wilson clearly isn’t either. And if Big Blue ever wants to get out of this rut, it's time to start doing things differently, rather than going down the same failed path.

Fans see it. Analysts see it. Even Daboll seems to see it, judging by his postgame comments, talking about Wilson as the Week 2 starter. And it’s not just what they put out on the field — it’s the optics. Malik Nabers is getting visibly frustrated, the offense has completely bottomed out, and the fans are already fed up with just about everything.

There’s still time. The season’s not lost after one game. But refusing to make the switch now — or even seriously entertain it — feels like Daboll might not be the guy moving forward.

If this is because the offensive line was so bad, the coaching staff doesn't want to risk harm to their prized rookie QB, then fine. Own that narrative, take accountability, then fix the line, and move on. Like, what are we doing here?

Wilson was supposed to be the safe option... the guy to save Dabs' job, no less. But there’s nothing safe about sinking slowly when a lifeboat’s sitting right there. Dart might not be the answer — fans sure hope he is. But the team will never know if he is or isn't with its HC shoving out the same product on the field and expecting different results. That's called insanity, and it's getting this team nowhere fast.
