Brian Daboll might give up on a Giants' pick too soon (but he’s not wrong)

In a crucial season for the New York Giants, could a bold move along the offensive line be made?

The New York Giants have to field a competitive team in 2025. Could that force Brian Daboll to make a bold but necessary move? It's safe to say that the Giants are in a tough spot. After their breakout season in 2022 that saw them win a playoff game, things have truly fallen off the rails in recent years.

And it feels like the 2025 NFL Season is a 'do or die' for many players and coaches in the franchise. One of the people certainly on the hot seat is GM Joe Schoen.

Opinions on Schoen may have some variation within the fanbase, but most fans can agree that he just hasn't entirely gotten the job done for the G-Men. Well, the Giants' head coach, Brian Daboll, might be forced to send a recent draft pick packing, even if it seems a bit too early.

Is John Michael Schmitz on his way out at some point?

John Michael Schmitz was a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. The center has started 28 out of a possible 34 regular season games for the Giants. JMS is still early in his NFL career, but the returns on this second-round investment haven't been all that great.

According to PFF, Schmitz earned a 50.2 pass blocking grade in 2024, which ranked 54th out of 64 qualified centers. Furthermore, he ranked 35th among all centers with a 61.4 grade, and PFF also noted he committed five penalties, which ranked 46th out of all centers, and also allowed six sacks, which was dead-last.

PFF's reliability can be questioned at times for sure, but they typically do get things mostly correct.

JMS is already 26 years old as well, so while he is still on the younger side, he is simultaneously on the older side for a third-year player. The Giants' offensive line has been a sore spot for years now, and given that things probably have to at least result in a winning record for folks to keep their jobs beyond 2025, Brian Daboll may be forced to make a tough call with their third-year center.

There are still some free agents left on the market along the interior offensive line, and just because Schmitz is an incumbent, it doesn't mean he'll be a lock to start or even be on the roster when the 2025 season officially begins.
