When Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea requested a trade, the New York Giants were presented with an admittedly irresponsible opportunity to fix one of their biggest weaknesses. Vea, one of the NFL's best run stuffers on the interior of the defensive line, could have single-handedly fixed Big Blue's horrific run defense from last season.
Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht doesn't intend to let that happen, though. When asked about the defensive tackles training camp hold-in, Licht told reporters, "I have no plans on trading Vita."
There's still a chance that a move gets made. Vea's agent has been clear in stating that the sides aren't close to a deal. But the Giants' hopes of landing the superstar defender are feeling more distant than ever.

Licht followed up his firm stance by saying, "We love Vita. We've been engaged with his agent recently. I don't know how it's gonna end, but we've been engaged and that's at least some progress."
Trade requests are often used as a negotiation tactic in the NFL. They can be a means of accelerating contract talks, putting the pressure on franchises to pay up or move on. Vea's situation has seemed a bit different, though.
The defensive tackle's agent doesn't appear optimistic about a new contract. He recently told reporters, “I just don’t see it ending in anything but a trade at this point."
Vea is already 31 years old and would need to be extended by any team trading for him, so it likely wouldn't take much draft capital to get a deal done. The Bucs may choose to just let the veteran play out the final year of his contract before letting him enter free agency in 2027.
Vita Vea's fading trade talks are a blessing in disguise for the Giants
As enticing as the possibility of adding a player like Vea to the roster may be, the Giants never should have been seriously interested in a trade.
New York already traded away Dexter Lawrence II this offseason, choosing not to spend a significant chunk of the salary cap on the interior of the defensive line. They then signed DJ Reader, another veteran who fills a role similar to what Vea would provide. Reader is a stout run defender who lines up primarily at nose tackle, just like Vea. The two veterans would be redundant on the same roster.
If the G-Men tried to force a defensive tackle tandem of Vea and Reader to work, it would mean limited opportunities for second-year defender Darius Alexander, who has a chance to break out this season.
Beyond the immediate roster fit, the Giants aren't in a stage of their rebuild where it makes sense to trade for and extend a 31-year-old defender near the top of the market.
The idea of a Giants trade for Vea was always unlikely. Now, it feels like it's almost impossible. Big Blue will have to ride out the season with Reader as its primary defensive tackle.
