The final days before the first preseason game are always very exciting and also a bit nerve-wracking. For the next few months, the New York Giants are going to completely take over our Sundays, as well as a majority of the week.
This team really moved itself in a new direction, and with that comes a plethora of new players. These potential stars in the making have a chance to really shine brightly in preseason, and the hope is that it follows into the regular season.
One of those great new pieces is cornerback Colton Hood, who has already been named the Giants’ most important rookie entering the 2026 season. FanSided’s Tarringo Basile-vaughan recently gave Hood that distinction, and considering the uncertainty surrounding the Giants’ cornerback room, he might be onto something.
Colton Hood has a real opportunity to win the Giants’ CB2 job
Hood has put together a strong training camp and has already seen some first-team reps. While some of those opportunities have come with the Giants’ veteran corners struggling to separate themselves, the opening is there for Hood to take advantage of it.
This franchise has been missing consistent cornerback play for some time now. Looking back on the last few years, it just does not correlate to the rest of the NFL’s top defenses. The days of Janoris Jenkins, Corey Webster, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie are long gone, and Deonte Banks alongside Paulson Adebo were just not “it” in 2025.
The numbers back that up. Banks finished 112th out of 114 qualified cornerbacks with a 42.4 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, while his 45.0 coverage grade ranked 110th. Adebo finished 74th overall with a 58.4 grade and 75th in coverage with a 57.9 grade.
Adebo settled in toward the end of the 2025 season with much better performances, but this training camp has still exposed some issues throughout the cornerback room. Banks, Adebo, and newcomer Greg Newsome II have yet to completely run away with the outside jobs, giving Hood a chance to work his way into the conversation.
That’s what makes Basile-vaughan’s choice so interesting. He pointed to Hood’s impressive training camp and the physical style that made him a potential first-round pick coming out of Tennessee. If Hood can secure the CB2 job, the Giants would be adding an aggressive boundary corner who isn’t afraid to press receivers, play the run, or disrupt screens.
The opening is there for Hood to take it.
Now, the 37th-overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft looks to try and re-ignite this defense on the outside, covering some of the biggest and baddest wide receivers in the NFL. The Giants have some highly talented teams to play this upcoming season, with the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions at the top of the list. That is also just outside of their own division, which has plenty of receiving talent in Dallas and Philadelphia.
Hood doesn’t need to become a shutdown corner immediately to make a major impact. If he can show enough during the preseason to earn the CB2 spot, that alone would give the Giants another young piece in a secondary that badly needs more consistency.
Hood has a lot of competition around him, but there is still a chance for him to make a name for himself within the next three games. Training camp has shown his abilities, but it all comes down to how he plays in an actual game.
