The New York Giants have been winless in the last two weeks, but they still sit atop the NFC East with a 3-2-1 record. With 11 games left in the regular season, there's a lot of football left, but as things stand, the Giants need more juice from their backfield.
And thankfully for them, a trade window flew open. On Monday, the Indianapolis Colts fired GM Chris Ballard as they dropped to 2-4. Indy could be one of the worst teams in the league and be sellers at the trade deadline to recoup assets for the future.
With the Giants having a massive void at running back, the opportunity to acquire Jonathan Taylor has to be a consideration.
Jonathan Taylor could become the Giants' biggest trade opportunity yet
Taylor is one of the best running backs in the league and would give the Giants a de facto RB1. Ahead of the 2026 season, he got a two-year, $44 million extension, keeping him signed through the 2028 season. His salary cap in 2027 is $21 million and $22.9 million in 2028, per Spotrac.
That deal puts Taylor third among RBs in AAV, but he's worth the money. Since entering the league in 2020, he has been a superstar. In 90 games with the Colts, Taylor has totaled 8,090 rushing yards and 76 rushing touchdowns.
Taylor has gone over 1,000 rushing yards and 10-plus rushing scores in four seasons. Just last season, he led the NFL in rushing touchdowns (18). And Taylor is off to a great start once again.
Through six games, Taylor is second in the NFL in carries (122), sixth in rushing yards (492), and tied for second in rushing touchdowns (6). He's a big-play threat every time he touches the ball, and if he joined the Giants, he would instantly improve a team that's desperately searching for stability in the running back room.
New York's backfield is a complete mess right now. After fumbling in the tie with the Washington Commanders, Cam Skattebo was demoted and given zero carries against the New Orleans Saints.
Skattebo took it on the chin and accepted that it happened because he put the ball on the ground. Yet, that had a ripple effect on the entire backfield. Tyrone Tracy Jr., Devin Singletary, and Najee Harris all had a carry against New Orleans, with Skattebo logging six total snaps.
After the game, John Harbaugh stated that no one has taken control of the starting job. His comments on the RB room continued on Monday. Harris revealed postgame that he was frustrated with how the snaps were split in Week 6, and Harbaugh responded by saying he's not in the best situation either.
"I would love to be in the Derrick Henry circumstance or the Saquon Barkley circumstance," per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.
Based on these comments and the fact that the Colts could have a fire sale happening in the next couple of weeks, the idea of trading for Taylor should be in consideration. The division title is up for grabs, and acquiring Taylor would be a move for 2026 and beyond.
There are plenty of things to like about this Giants team, but RB isn't one of them. Trading for Taylor would immediately change that and give New York a star RB to build with.
