With the NFL Draft right around the corner, the New York Giants will have the opportunity to continue building for their future. With several positional needs, the G-Men must decide which position to prioritize with the fifth overall selection.
This will be John Harbaugh’s first pick as Big Blue’s head coach, making it essential to set the tone for his tenure, and with this draft class loaded, there really isn’t a wrong direction for a team like the Giants to go in.
Many people, myself included, expect the G-Men to select a former Ohio State player with their first-round pick. The two names that stand out the most are linebacker Sonny Styles and safety Caleb Downs. However, one NFL expert isn't ruling out the possibility of the Giants selecting another Buckeye, who could address arguably the biggest remaining need for the team: support for Jaxson Dart.
Daniel Jeremiah says WR feels like a possibility for Big Blue at pick No. 5
Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network recently stated that he thinks the Giants could target a wide receiver with the fifth pick, which is a huge need for the Big Blue after Wan’Dale Robinson left in free agency, and Malik Nabers' status is uncertain going into training camp.
While Jeremiah states that he likes the Isaiah Likely signing because of his relationship with Harbaugh, the need to surround Dart with weapons makes Ohio State receiver Carnell Tate a very interesting choice.
He went on to say that he usually opts for the best available player, but he has Tate listed as his sixth-best player in the draft.
Jeremiah called him a complete receiver who can make plays downfield. Last season, Tate had 875 yards and nine touchdowns on 51 receptions with the Buckeyes, which speaks for itself.
Tate would be a good replacement for Nabers should he end up missing time at the start of the season, and just imagine the one-two punch the two would have when both are healthy.
The Giants' wide receiver room also consists of Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin III, and Isaiah Hodgins. With Nabers and Tate in the mix, this group could become one of the most dangerous wide receiver rooms in the league, which would completely make up for losing Wan’Dale.
I think the Giants will draft Downs. That being said, they will most likely take a receiver at some point, but that could come in the second round with Louisville’s Chris Bell, but who knows, Jeremiah could be onto something.
If Harbaugh wants to make a big splash with his first selection as the Giants’ head coach, he could look in the direction of Dart’s next weapon.
