There weren't many things to be encouraged by in the New York Giants' injury-riddled Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, but rookie cornerback Colton Hood's performance certainly wasn't one of them.
The second-round pick was forced into the starting lineup with both Deonte Banks and Paulson Adebo sidelined. Taking on Davante Adams, one of the most experienced and technically-sound wide receivers in football, with a national audience, the rookie was set up for disaster.
If his Week 2 performance is any indication, Hood will still need tome time to develop before he's ready to play a significant role for the G-Men.
Colton Hood's Week 2 performance exposes glaring Giants secondary problem
Adams had Hood's head spinning from start to finish. Per Pro Football Focus, the rookie allowed four catches on six targets for 40 yards and a touchdown on the night. Adams beat him on a quick fade for his second score, and the cornerback didn't come close to making a play on the ball.
Hood wasn't alone in his misery. When Greg Newsome II, Big Blue's other starting cornerback, was matched up with Adams, he was consistently getting shaken out of his shoes. The veteran receiver finished the night with eight catches for 195 yards and two touchdowns.
Even without Puka Nacua on the field, the Giants' cornerbacks were facing an impossible situation. With the way he was playing on Monday night, nobody in the league was going to stop Adams. Down two of their top four outside cornerbacks, New York didn't stand a chance.
Still, Hood's shaky performance in Week 2 and his failure to carve out a significant role in Week 1 should be a clear sign to Giants fans. The rookie is still a promising player who could develop into a starter for the G-Men, but he's not close to being ready at this point.
The secondary is a problem capable of derailing the 2026 season if it isn't addressed soon. Banks will help improve the unit when he's back on the field, but the cornerbacks weren't particularly impressive in Week 1, either. The G-Men need someone in the cornerback room to step up quickly, or they could be in for a disaster.
Luckily, the Giants will get a couple of less daunting matchups in the coming weeks. Big Blue will take on the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals in the next two weeks. Neither team has had a receiver eclipse 80 yards in a game yet this season.
