Well, it was fun while it lasted. After four weeks of flawless kicking, New York Giants undrafted rookie kicker Dominic Zvada finally remembered he was human in Sunday’s anxiety-riddled 27-27 overtime tie with the Washington Commanders.

Zvada-matic went 2-for-5 on field goals in a rain-soaked Landover, MD, missing from 50 and 57 yards in regulation before pushing a 46-yarder wide left in overtime that would’ve given Big Blue the lead. After entering Week 5 a perfect 9-for-9, the 22-year-old picked a pretty unfortunate time to have his first rough afternoon.

But before we start freaking out about the Giants’ kicker situation again (anything but more kicking woes), let’s remember why we’re here in the first place. Zvada is chasing Ali Haji-Sheikh’s rookie scoring record and Jay Feely’s all-time single-season mark, and even after Sunday’s three-miss adventure, he’s still in pretty good shape.

Here’s where things stand after leg day nearly got the best of the undrafted rookie:

Zvada is five points ahead of Haji-Sheikh’s pace and six behind Feely’s through five games.

While it was more Hurrican Isaias than sunshine and rainbows, he still added nine more points to his season total against Washington, connecting from 51 and 56 yards and making all three extra points. So while the three misses were far from ideal, it’s not like he just forgot how to kick a football.

The overtime potential game-winning miss obviously stinks, especially after Jameis Winston and Co. fought back from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit for the first time in 231 tries. But four of Zvada’s five attempts came from 50-plus yards in truly miserable conditions, so I’m willing to cut him a little slack.

Fortunately, the G-Men are back at MetLife Stadium in Week 6 to host the 1-4 New Orleans Saints, who have been pretty generous to opposing kickers through five games:

  • Week 1 vs. Lions: 1 FG, 4 XPs (7 points)
  • Week 2 vs. Ravens: 1 FG, 2 XPs (5 points)
  • Week 3 vs. Raiders: 3 FGs, 2 XPs (11 points)
  • Week 4 vs. Falcons: 1 FG, 6 XPs (9 points)
  • Week 5 vs. Vikings: 3 FGs, 2 XPs (11 points)

Total: 43 points allowed
Average: 8.6 points per game

NOLA has allowed 43 points to kickers this season, an average of 8.6 per game. If the Arizona native can do that Sunday, he’d be hovering right around 50 points through six weeks, which keeps him comfortably ahead ofHaji-Sheikh for the rookie-record pace.

The perfect streak is gone, but the record quest is still looking pretty good. And after what happened against the Commies, I’d imagine Zvada wouldn’t mind getting back to being Zvada-matic sooner rather than later.
