The New York Giants have done plenty right this offseason. Not only did they bring in future Hall of Fame head coach John Harbaugh, but they also added some quality pieces during the first wave of free agency.
Several key areas were addressed. Franchise quarterback Jaxson Dart got a new target in 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end Isaiah Likely, while running back Cam Skattebo got a 300-pound chaos agent ready to lead the way out of the backfield in Patrick Ricard. All-Pro punter Jordan Stout and veteran kicker Jason Sanders were brought in to finally settle the special teams situation, and the defense got reinforcements at linebacker and cornerback with Tremaine Edmunds and Greg Newsome III.
But even with all those additions, there's still a glaring hole on their defensive line that has yet to be addressed, but they could be saving that fix for the draft if their recent pre-draft shenanigans prove to mean anything.
Oklahoma held its Pro Day on Thursday, and the G-Men were in attendance with their eyes on defensive lineman Gracen Halton, who could be an interesting Day 3 target for Big Blue in April.
Giants showing strong interest in Oklahoma DL Gracen Halton
Halton might’ve had his Pro Day in Norman, OK, but he was back in the New York Groove on Thursday. NFL draft analyst Tony Pauline reported that the G-Men met with the 22-year-old and gave him plenty of attention:
"Halton met with both New York teams, the Jets and Giants, who are showing him a lot of love."
The 6-foot-3, 293-pound defensive tackle is an explosive interior disruptor who wins with quickness and effort. Halton ran a 4.82 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine and plays like it shows up on tape, consistently shooting gaps and creating pressure from the inside.
That’s exactly the type of player the Giants could use next to Dexter Lawrence. Opposing offenses have been able to double-team Sexy Dexy into oblivion, and New York still hasn’t found a consistent interior partner who can take advantage of those one-on-one matchups. Finding someone who can would be major.
Halton won't exactly be the game-changing pick they need -- seldom Day 3 pick are -- but he’s the kind of Day 3 value selection that could quietly solve a real problem on the Giants’ defensive line.
