Drew Lock stays humble but the NY Giants need results against the Saints
With Tommy DeVito's forearm still not at 100%, the New York Giants are turning to journeyman backup Drew Lock for his second straight start. Lock got the nod last week on Thanksgiving, and while he made some impressive plays—particularly with his legs—the Giants fell short, extending their losing streak to seven games and dropping to 2-10 on the season.
The former Denver Bronco and Seattle Seahawk, Drew Lock, met with the media on Wednesday and was asked if his opportunity to start for the Giants down the stretch was an audition to prove he could become a starter in the league again. Lock gave a humble response, stating his main focus is “playing good football” and to “make myself proud.”
While Lock’s words were certainly grounded and reflective, the Giants need better results from him this weekend after a rocky first start.
New York Giants must get better results out of Drew Lock this weekend and beyond
The 28-year-old quarterback signed a one-year, $5 million deal this past offseason. After Brian Daboll opted to start Tommy DeVito over Lock against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 12, an injury to DeVito opened the door for Lock to step in.
In his Giants debut as a starter against the Cowboys last Thursday, Lock’s most exciting moments came on the ground. He rushed for 57 yards on four carries, including a touchdown that helped New York take an early 7-3 lead.
However, he wasn’t particularly sharp throwing the football, completing just 21 of 32 passes for 178 yards and throwing an awful pick-six that turned out to be the deciding factor in the game. After generating just 245 total yards against Tampa Bay with DeVito the week prior, the Giants managed only 247 yards against the Cowboys, with Lock getting sacked six times and the team converting just three of 12 third-down attempts.
All in all, it wasn’t a great day for Lock. Now, as he prepares for his first official home start of the season against the Saints this Sunday, he needs to turn his words to the press into action on the field. Both the Giants and their fans are desperate for a strong performance from Lock and the offense. New York is 0-6 at MetLife Stadium this season, scoring just 58 total points at home with only four touchdowns.
