Fans were hilariously tricked into thinking Cowboys claimed Daniel Jones following release
By Ryan Heckman
It's been a week for Daniel Jones and the New York Giants.
To kick things off, this past week started with head coach Brian Daboll making the decision to bench Jones. It was a move which many saw coming from a mile away. This wasn't surprising.
What was a bit more surprising was hearing that Daboll chose Tommy DeVito as his starter going forward, adding to a week full of storylines. Speaking of adding to the storylines, Jones then spoke to the media and gave a public farewell and "thank you" to the Giants on Thursday.
This was a bit curious, as Jones was still a member of the Giants and there were seven games yet to play.
More Giants news:
Jones knew it was time, though, as he indeed asked for his release and it was granted to him on Friday morning. The Giants would be moving forward with DeVito and Drew Lock, while Jones was set to hit waivers.
What teams might claim Jones? The truth is, probably nobody. Teams will likely wait for him to clear waivers so that they don't have to pick up the rest of that contract, but once he clears, Jones is free to sign with any team interested in him.
Did the Cowboys claim Daniel Jones off of waivers?
That said, fans got a bit of a scare Friday. After the announcement of his release, Jones' player card appeared on the Dallas Cowboys' website and a screenshot began circling social media like wildfire. Immediately, fans thought this meant the Cowboys had indeed claimed Jones off waivers.
However, this would quickly be put to rest when it was explained that NFL team sites do this often with player cards.
No, the Cowboys did not claim Jones off of waivers. But, from the looks of social media, it would have been quite the sight to see. Some Cowboys fans were ready to riot.
Dallas is, of course, without starting quarterback Dak Prescott for the remainder of the year as he is on injured reserve. This leaves Cooper Rush as the team's de facto starter, with Trey Lance backing him up.
It sure would have been funny to see the Cowboys claim Jones only to start him against the Giants on Thanksgiving Day. The narratives would write themselves at that point.
It would have been even funnier knowing the Cowboys picked up that contract after the majority of Dallas' fan base had ridiculed New York over ever handing it out in the first place.
