Dating back to last season, plenty of New York Giants fans wondered about the job security of both head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen.
10 weeks into this season, and we've got a firm answer on one of them. The Giants officially fired Daboll after another fourth-quarter collapse, this time against the Chicago Bears. But, is this the last major change the Giants are going to make within their coaching staff and leadership?
For now, it appears that way. Giants beat reporter Ralph Vacchiano chimed in on the security of Schoen, in particular, after the news broke of Daboll's firing.
"New York Giants GM Joe Schoen may indeed still be on the hot seat after firing coach Brian Daboll today …
… but the sense I’ve gotten over the last few weeks is that Schoen is a lot safer than people on the outside think," he wrote.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen appears to be safe after Brian Daboll's firing
Once again, going back to the tail end of last season, there was a similar sentiment held by many in regards to both Daboll and Schoen. On one hand, it would make sense to clean house and get rid of them both.
On the other hand, after the draft and Giants' ultimate selection of quarterback Jaxson Dart, the situation became a little murky. How long would the Giants give Daboll with a brand-new franchise quarterback?
Side note: Daniel Jones' success in 2025 certainly didn't help Daboll's case.
Now that Daboll is gone, are the Giants going to allow Schoen the privilege of hiring another head coach after he clearly whiffed on his first attempt?
In a few words, this could be Schoen's only second chance.
Schoen and Daboll had the connection from their time in Buffalo, of course, but if he's allowed to stick around after this season, Schoen has to make his next hire the right one. It was obvious to see he wanted to bring a hot name with him to New York, and it made sense at the time after seeing Josh Allen's rise.
But now, Schoen has his work cut out for him. If he is truly safe, and we look ahead to his next hire, it is abundantly clear that he will not get another second chance.
Of course, we might come back to this in a few months and laugh if the Giants ultimately decide to move on from Schoen in the end. For right now, though, he appears safer than we might think.
