The biggest news story surrounding the NFL at the moment has almost nothing to do with the New York Giants, and that's the best news the team could receive. Brendan Sorsby is headed to the supplemental draft after his gambling scandal forced him out of college football.
Quarterback-needy teams are set to enter a bidding war for the young passer, with expected costs landing in the range of a second-round draft pick. Thankfully, the Giants already have a QB to build around in Jaxson Dart.
The Philadelphia Eagles, on the other hand, are in a bit more muddled a situation. While Jalen Hurts has had plenty of playoff success in Philly, recent developments have analysts wondering whether the Giants' NFC East rival could be looking for a replacement in Sorsby.
If the Eagles spend a Day 2 pick on the controversial quarterback, it'll be an unexpected gift for Giants fans.
Giants should hope Eagles bid on Brendan Sorsby in the NFL supplemental draft
It's easy to see why the Eagles would talk themselves into bidding a second-round draft pick on the former Texas Tech quarterback. They've had success with a second-round quarterback recently, getting Hurts there in 2020. Why not try to make the magic happen again?
And if that's not enough to lure Howie Roseman into the trap, the idea that his pick should be near the end of the second round might do the trick. Other QB-needy teams may not be willing to use a top-40 overall pick on a quarterback, but could the Eagles be convinced to drop a pick closer to No. 60?
The supplemental draft is conducted as a blind auction, so we won't know the price or the winner until later in the summer. But it's important to note that whichever team lands the young quarterback isn't getting a sure thing.
Sorsby has talent, but he's incredibly raw as a prospect. While his arm looks elite on certain throws, he often sprays the ball out of the reach of his receivers. His mechanics need a lot of work, and there's no guarantee that he'll ever develop into a starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL.
If the Eagles land Sorsby, there's a chance he becomes a star, extending their reign over the division. But there's an even greater chance that he never reaches that potential and goes down as a wasted draft pick for a team in need of depth.
