Giants could make the wrong kind of NFL history with Week 17 loss

The New York Giants are playing out the string in the 2024 season, as the team's lousy 2-13 record is a sign of just how far things have fallen. It is not hyperbole to call this team the worst in the entire NFL.

The only two wins the Giants had this season were a road victory against a Deshaun Watson-led Cleveland Browns team and an improbable victory against a Seattle Seahawks squad that looks more impressive by the week. Outside of that, the Giants have been wretched.

Fans at MetLife Stadium have gone through those turnstiles eight times this season, and they have come away disappointed in all eight of them. A loss in Week 17 could help the Giants secure an infamous place in NFL history that no one wants on their resume.

If the Giants end up falling to 2-14 on the season with a loss against the Indianapolis Colts, New York will become the first team in NFL history to lose nine home games in a season. Even if they end up with the No. 1 pick, making history in all the wrong ways like this is not what the Giants needed to see.

Giants could become first NFL team ever to lose nine home games in one season

The last time the Giants lost all their home games in a season was 1974, in which they only had seven home games. The 70s were the black hole of Giants football, but the last half-decade is giving that era a serious run for its money lately.

When Daniel Jones was the quarterback, the Giants were a merely bad team plagued by well below-average quarterback play and a lack of creativity. Without him, they are so pathetic that they would be considered a huge underdog against essentially every other team in the league.

The Giants could turn things around if they knock it out of the park in the next offseason. However, with rumors abounding that Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen are not guaranteed to be out of a job next year, one wonders just how much turnover there will be in New York.

The Giants are on the verge of losing in a way that has literally never been done before in NFL history. What better way to end a year where all but two gamedays have been one piece of nauseating slop after another? Why not make history like this?
