The New York Giants may have made the best head coaching hire of the offseason by bringing in John Harbaugh to right a sinking ship. Harbaugh has begun filling his coaching staff, with his most notable hire being Dennard Wilson as his defensive coordinator. However, the Giants haven't had much luck in their offensive coordinator search.
The expectation was that Harbaugh would bring over Todd Monken to the Giants as their offensive coordinator. But Harbaugh and the Giants were thrown a curveball, as Monken was hired as the new head coach for the Cleveland Browns. Since then, the Giants have begun a wide search for a new offensive coordinator. Now, fans have watched another top candidate become unavailable.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero was first to report that the Denver Broncos have promoted quarterbacks coach Davis Webb to offensive coordinator. This comes over a week after the Broncos fired Joe Lombardi. Webb was requested to interview with the Giants for their vacant offensive coordinator position.
Giants OC candidate Davis Webb receives promotion from Broncos
The Giants hiring Webb would have been a true comeback story. He was a former backup quarterback for the Giants before transitioning to coaching. He has since raised his stock as a future head coach, after his work developing Bo Nix with the Broncos. Webb even received plenty of head coaching interviews this offseason. Ultimately, he didn't get any of the open gigs. Now, he receives his first chance as an offensive coordinator on a Super Bowl contending team entering the 2026 season.
Webb would have been a dream hire for the Giants. Considering his work in taking Nix's game to the next level, imagine the leap Dart would have had from his impressive rookie season? Not to mention, Webb would have pieces to work with in running back Cam Skattebo and wide receiver Malik Nabers.
In all likelihood, the Giants would have been searching for an offensive coordinator next offseason if Webb succeeded. If he did, he'd be a lock to get a head coaching gig in 2027.
As for the remaining options for the Giants, Harbaugh has interviewed or are set to interview the likes of former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury, ex-Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan, Los Angeles Chargers quarterbacks coach Shane Day, Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, Miami Dolphins wide receivers coach Robert Prince, and Colts passing game coordinator Alex Tanney.
Webb would have been an ideal offensive coordinator candidate for the Giants, but it was not to be. Now, it's back to the drawing board for Harbaugh and the team to find the right person for the job.
