No name was more cursed by the New York Giants fanbase over the last few years than defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, as his inability to close out games with big leads despite some very intriguing personnel led to one of the most disappointing eras of Giants football imagineable.
Bowen was fired midway through the 2025 season, and it seems unlikely that he is going to get a job calling defensive plays in the near future. However, at just 39 years old, Bowen is still young enough to make a go of it in the NFL. He's even landed on his feet with an old friend.
The New England Patriots, currently being coached by one of Bowen's mentors in Mike Vrabel, have hired Bowen as a defensive analyst for the 2026 season. Going from coordinator to analyst is a huge downgrade, but such a demotion is expected after a season that was one of the most excruciating in franchise history to sit through.
Patriots hire former Giants DC Shane Bowen
Bowen got his start as an assistant with the Houston Texans when Vrabel was there, and he followed him when he became the head coach of the Tennessee Titans. Bowen started out as the outside linebackers coach before being promoted to the title of defensive coordinator, a role in which he lased three seasons.
Bowen had plenty of success in Tennessee, as he ranked in the top two in run defense across the entire NFL in his first couple of seasons and never fell below 16th in points allowed. Bowen was unable to replicate his success with the Giants, allowing the 21st-most and 26th-most points while ranking dead last in yards per carry surrendered in 2025.
What ultimately did Bowen in was his inability to hold leads. The Giants may have been a fringe playoff team last season had they simply managed to hold onto their advantages in the fourth quarter, but Bowen getting extremely passive whenever his team was up. Bowen will need to fix that flaw if he ever wants another coordinator job.
Bowen leaned on his old friend Vrabel to get him a job as he tries to rehabilitate his reputation within the league. While some may try to look at his Tennessee tenure fondly, all Giants fans will need to do is flip on any one of his fourth-quarter collapses and wait with baited breath for the Bowen optimists to change their mind.
