This is a different New York Giants team that we're looking at. The G-Men have added proven winners in droves this offseason, starting with head coach John Harbaugh. The former Ravens coach will undoubtedly have the biggest impact of New York's offseason additions, but one of his staff members is somehow flying under the radar.

Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson has plans to make major changes in the Giants' defense, potentially pushing the unit into the league's top ten.

His impact, whether positive or negative, will be one of the most important storylines to watch this season for Giants fans.

Dennard Wilson's Giants defensive overhaul is the under-the-radar story fans should be watching

Dan Duggan of The Athletic recently named Wilson the Giants' most intriguing offseason addition. Duggan said, "While new head coach John Harbaugh’s arrival will have the biggest impact on the Giants’ fortunes, there’s an understanding of what to expect from his 18 years in Baltimore. The more intriguing addition is defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, a highly regarded defensive mind despite two underwhelming seasons leading a Tennessee Titans defense devoid of talent."

Wilson was the defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans last season, but he lost his position after the Titans fired Brian Callahan. Coincidentally, Callahan has now joined Harbaugh's staff in New York.

The DC's Titans units weren't exactly dominant, as they finished 28th in EPA allowed per play last season and gave up more than 50 total touchdowns. In 2024, Wilson's first season with the Titans, Tennessee's defense finished closer to the middle of the pack in most categories.

So, why would the Giants seek out a coordinator who has had minimal success in the past to fill one of the most important positions in the building?

The hope is that Wilson's unique scheme and skills in player development can bring the best out of an already talented group in New York. The Giants have a stronger roster on defense than Wilson ever had with the Titans.

Big Blue has built one of the most dangerous groups of edge defenders in football, but the rest of the defense has fallen short of expectations in recent years. In 2025, the secondary and the run defense weren't good enough to highlight the pass rush.

Wilson's background as a defensive backs coach should bring out major improvements from players like Paulson Adebo, Deonte Banks, and Greg Newsome. The Giants already have the talent to field a solid secondary. Now, it's on Wilson to put the pieces together.

The new DC is expected to deploy a unique scheme, one that he has described as "positionless." This should be perfect for rookie Arvell Reese, allowing him to make plays on the ball without being restricted to a classic inside linebacker role.

If the Giants are going to take the jump that fans expect to see in 2026, Wilson's defense will need to be at the forefront of the improvement.
