Giants refusing to jump on fumble sums up nightmarish 2024 season
By Mike Luciano
The NY Giants are one of the most unwatchable messes in the league, so much so that even trying to restore the feel-good vibes from last year by releasing Daniel Jones and starting Tommy DeVito are doing little to help them. In fact, Brian Daboll's team is completely checked out.
The Giants found themselves down 24-0 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first half, and they can put some of those points up to a general lack of defensive effort. the Giants had a fumble at the goal-line gift-wrapped to them, and they chose not to take advantage for no reason at all.
The Giants forced the ball loose, but no one jumped on it despite the fact the play was not called dead. Mayfield was able to jump on the ball, saving the drive and leading to an extra three points from a Chase McLaughlin field goal. The nightmare keeps getting worse for the Giants.

Midway through the second quarter, the Buccaneers had over 200 yards of total offense, while the Giants had 19. The switch to Tommy DeVito has done little to ignite the offense, leading to serious questions about why exactly he was named the starter over former Broncos QB Drew Lock.
The Giants' offense looks the same as it did with Jones, albeit with some worse offensive line play. If Malik Nabers and Tyrone Tracy don't rip off big plays, it looks hard for Daboll's offense to move the ball. The poor play has become so toxic that even the defense is starting to feel the extra effects.
The defense has been getting gashed by a Tampa Bay team that is missing Chris Godwin and rotating their running backs at a borderline random rate. The Bucs are good, but they shouldn't be this in command on the road against a defense that has so many good players on it.
When simple effort plays like this start going out the window, that is a sign the team is checked out and begging for the end of the season to come.
