Giants are reportedly engaged in tug of war over most divisive prospect in 2025 Draft

With the 2025 NFL Draft days away, the New York Giants are reportedly split on who they want to select with their top pick.

The 2025 NFL Draft will kick off Thursday evening, April 24, and the New York Giants are in possession of the third-overall pick. The entire NFL world knows Cam Ward is going first overall to the Tennessee Titans, and that the Cleveland Browns are expected to pick between Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter. Despite that knowledge, there still isn’t consensus in the Giants’ building about what the team will do with the No. 3 pick.

Of course, New York must wait to see who the Browns will pick, but the team could easily plan out an approach for each path, and be ready to roll on Thursday night. The reason that hasn’t, reportedly, happened yet is that the organization is split internally on what it should do.

Veteran draft analyst Todd McShay detailed this internal disagreement on multiple platforms on Monday. Speaking on The McShay Show and The Rich Eisen Show, McShay explained the point of contention in New York is rather to draft Shedeur Sanders at No. 3 or not. According to him, the scouting department is in favor of selecting Sanders third overall, but the coaching staff wants to go another direction.

McShay said the split opinions aren’t a full on tussle yet, and that team owner John Mara has stayed out of it, but just days ahead of the draft, the franchise still isn’t in alignment.

Giants are still split on Shedeur Sanders ahead of the 2025 Draft

It has been frequently reported that no team has done more work on a prospect than the New York has done on Sanders. Dating back to the fall, the Giants reportedly had staff members at every open practice in Colorado and every game. The team hosted Sanders for a visit in New Jersey, sent about 13 people to his pro day in Boulder, and went back to Boulder a week after that to put him through a private workout.

However, most of that work was led by the scouting department. While the scouting department was spending the fall getting a close look at Sanders, the coaching staff was busy coaching the team during the season. Knowing that, it’s no surprise the different departments see the quarterback differently. Additionally, Shedeur Sanders is an incredibly polarizing prospect in general, so opinions on him are already all over the board.

While a lot of questionable reports come out around this time, there seems to be some truth to this one, based on an answer Brian Daboll gave in his pre-draft press conference on Monday. The head coach was asked if he and general manager Joe Schoen were aligned in their evaluations of this year’s quarterback class. Daboll responded by saying the building has great communication, everyone has thoughts, and it’s okay to disagree, as long as you aren’t disagreeable.

In other words, yes, the people in the building are seeing these quarterback prospects differently. That happens, though; consensus can be rare. What Daboll ended his comments with is what’s important. He expressed that at the end of the day, when a team drafts a player, everyone needs to be on board with the pick.

Regardless of individual evaluations, the entire team must fully commit to the success of whoever is drafted. There are no do-overs, so everyone will need to let go of who they wanted and move forward on board with whoever is selected.
