The NFL is a results-driven business, and underperformance comes with consequences. Just ask the New York Giants' running backs, who have been under fire before quieting the outside noise in Week 7, at least for now.
Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary have all had at least one moment of reckoning in 2026. Their shortcomings have (understandably) become a hot-button topic among Giants fans, and the trade chatter continues to grow louder. However, they each enjoyed time in the sun in the Giants' surprising 27-21 overtime road upset of the Houston Texans.
All three of Skattebo, Tracy and Singletary found the end zone in Houston, and New York ran for a season-high 188 yards. It was the best game by expected points added (EPA) per designed rush versus the DeMeco Ryans-led Texans (h/t Shawn Syed of SumerSports).
Ryans was hired as Houston's head coach in 2023, so we're talking about a fairly substantial sample size. Statistically, no one has moved the ball on the ground against them as effectively as the Giants did. Together, Skattebo, Tracy and Singletary's efforts were instrumental in taking down the Texans, and frankly, their massive day couldn't have come at a better time.
Giants' RBs picked the perfect time to silence the outside noise
If we can feel the heat, you'd best believe Skattebo, Tracy and Singletary do too. Their reaction after the latter of the three scored a game-winning 30-yard touchdown to defeat the Texans says it all:

A picture is worth a thousand words, as the saying goes, but in this case, it's a video. That's the look of three guys who took serious weight off their shoulders; the relief is palpable. Skattebo, Tracy and Singletary understand that nothing will be handed to them, and they have to go out there and earn opportunities.
SNY's Connor Hughes recently said the Giants "will likely try to add to the running back room before the trade deadline." Nevertheless, when push came to shove, the backfield delivered. Skattebo led the way, turning 17 carries into 124 yards and a paydirt trip, but Tracy chipped in, too, and Singletary walked it off.
Giants' RBs better not get too comfortable after breakthrough performance
Skattebo was in head coach John Harbaugh's doghouse for the Giants' 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Tracy is slowly working himself back into the rotation after falling out of favor with the new regime. Singletary was a healthy scratch for three straight contests before the club released Najee Harris.
Needless to say, Skattebo, Tracy and Singletary can't get complacent. While the trio fared well against Houston, one impressive outing doesn't mean they're off the hook. They still have work to do to convince the G-Men there's no need to bring in reinforcements.
Hopefully, this is a sign of what's to come and not an outlier. If not, don't be surprised if Big Blue explores the market for RB help. They can't afford to put too much pressure on quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who's learning the offense on the fly after arriving as a midseason acquisition.
