The New York Giants were already off to a rough start in Week 3 and the game hadn't even started yet. Kicker Graham Gano was injured during pre-game warm-ups and, while he did attempt (and make) a field goal in the second half, it was clear that he wasn't going to be the same.
With Gano's groin injury keeping him out of commission for the foreseeable future, the Giants sprung into action, signing former Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo, who worked out with the team on Tuesday morning. This is a move that makes perfect sense for the Giants and it's good to see that they're making logical moves.
Giants sign Younghoe Koo to helpfully solve their kicking woes
While Gano was once a talented kicker in the NFL and for the Giants, his better years had passed him by. He's injury prone and, truthfully, even he is healthy, he's not the same guy he once was. This injury could be the nail in the coffin as far as not just his Giants kicking career is concerned, but overall kicking career given he's an oft-injured 38-year-old kicker. He'll likely be landing on IR, keeping him out for at least four weeks.
As for Koo, he was not having a good year with the Falcons, missing a game-tying field goal against the Buccaneers and getting cut shortly after. That being said, Koo deserves a second chance and maybe a change of scenery is what he needs to get back to being the dominant kicker he once was.
Koo also is a local guy, having played high school football just 15 miles from MetLife Stadium at Ridgewood. Yet another reason the Giants had to make this move and add Koo to their roster. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out, but they'll never know unless they try. Koo could be just what the Giants need on special teams.
