It was pretty fun to talk about the possibility of Matthew Stafford getting traded to the NY Giants and actually playing for them in 2025 and potentially beyond. Stafford would have given the Giants their best quarterback since Eli Manning and it'd have finally brought a little stability to a franchise that has been floundering around aimlessly for most of the past decade.
Well, sorry to be the one to tell you Giants fans (assuming you don't already know) but Stafford is off the table. He agreed to stay with the Los Angeles Rams and now the Giants have to figure out what they're going to do at quarterback for the 2025 season.
More NY Giants news:
This is not a great time to need a quarterback because the free-agent and draft classes leave a lot to be desired. Free-agency-wise, the best option is Sam Darnold or a washed up Aaron Rodgers so that tells you all you need to know right there.
The draft is probably going to be where the Giants are going to find their next quarterback. Unfortunately for the fans, the Giants won a few meaningless games at the end of the 2024 season, bumping them down from being the potential first overall pick to now picking third.
Normally, picking third wouldn't be the end of the world for quarterback-needy teams. For instance, last year the Patriots were able to get Drake Maye third overall. That's not the case this year, however, as there are two big quarterback prospects and then a massive step down.
NY Giants might be forced into a massive draft trade after Matthew Stafford news
If the Giants want to guarantee that they're going to get the quarterback they want in the draft, the move they'll need to make is swapping spots with the Titans. The Giants would move up to the first pick in the trade while the Titans would move down two spots and pick third.
This would ensure that New York gets Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward (whichever quarterback the front office thinks is a better fit for them) and not leave it to chance. If they stand pat at three, there's a really good chance that both signal-callers will be gone because the Titans and Browns both need quarterbacks, plus the Raiders are likely waiting in the wings to swoop in and move up too.
New York might still explore some options, such as signing Aaron Rodgers, but that's not going to be a long-term option. Trading up to the number one pick in the draft might be their best bet now that Stafford is off the table.
