The update New York Giants fans desperately hoped to avoid while they waited on pins and needles has come. Jaxson Dart is reportedly expected to undergo season-ending knee surgery.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo broke the news first, adding that Dart's ACL is intact. They buried the lede, though, because ESPN's Adam Schefter revealed that the electrifying young quarterback suffered MCL, PCL and meniscus damage.
Dart went down in the first quarter of New York's 28-6 Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. A defender crashed into his lower leg on a sack, and his knee bent awkwardly. It was a brutal hit, and an even scarier scene as he limped to the sideline.
Needless to say, losing Dart has significant ramifications for the Giants' outlook, both in the short term and the long haul. Their odds of competing in 2026 are effectively over sans him, their most important player. Depending on his recovery timeline, the next campaign could be a wash too.
What comes next for Jaxson Dart, the Giants after reports of season-ending surgery
Barring a miraculous turnaround, we won't see Dart suit up until 2027. That's also a return to play, not a return to form; many don't regain their pre-injury ability until the second year after a procedure. Talk about an absolute bummer.
It'll be fascinating where Dart is physically and mentally (as Giants star wide receiver Malik Nabers showed us can be challenging) in due course. His mobility and scrambling are game-changers and a big part of the offensive game plan.
Does New York exercise caution with Dart moving forward and limit designed rushing plays? Obviously, they'd rather not take away his superpower, yet they'd also prefer to have him on the field. The 2025 first-round pick and the team are at their best when he's running around, improvising and making things happen.
Nevertheless, time will tell what state the G-Men are in when Dart might truly feel like himself again. Do they adjust their expectations and roster-building strategy to align with his full comeback? It's fair to wonder what status means for a regime led by head coach John Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen, if anything.
Jaxson Dart's injury sends the Giants into a tailspin
Is New York suddenly headed toward an organizational crossroads? Dart was the main reason Harbaugh decided to lead the franchise and hitch his wagon to Schoen. Does a curveball change the calculus?
Harbaugh was signed to a five-year, $100 million contract in January, so he presumably won't be going anywhere anytime soon. But the Super Bowl XLVII champion didn't take the Giants job to oversee a transition phase, even admitting as much in his introductory press conference.
So, given Harbaugh's desire to win, does Big Blue try to bridge the gap with another QB until Dart's back? FOX Sports' Ralph Vacchiano noted that the faith in veteran backup Jameis Winston "gets shakier when it's a long-term proposition."
Shifting gears to Schoen, can he survive the nightmare that's unfortunately become reality for the Giants? His tenure has been an abject failure, and the clock may run out on him if/when the club falls apart during Dart's absence/rehab.
There are several questions in the immediate wake of Dart getting hurt — and so few answers.
