New York Giants fans are ready for Jaxson Dart to make his debut for the team. The Giants spent a first-round pick on Dart in this year's draft (and traded back into the first round to do so) and naturally, fans are going to be giddy with excitement at what he can do and if he's the franchise quarterback for this team.
When will Dart start taking the snaps for the Giants? The NFL GameDay crew discussed it ahead of Week 2 and Steve Mariucci took the lead during that conversation.
"He's not ready to have the whole volume of offense 'cause he hasn't practiced enough... Maybe there's these 20 plays that he practices a little bit and is ready to do that. Maybe a little here (points to Week 2 against the Cowboys), maybe a little there (points to Week 3 against the Chiefs), this is a tough schedule," Mariucci said before eventually pointing to Week 5 against the Saints and insinuating that could be when the rookie makes his debut.
Oftentimes, a team will make a quarterback change during the bye week but, unfortunately for the Giants, theirs isn't until Week 14. As Mariucci said, "That's way the way back here in Week 14" so Dart would likely be starting long before that bye week approaches.
NFL GameDay debates when Jaxson Dart could debut for Giants
Everything Mariucci said in this segment makes perfect sense. The Saints could be a good team to have the rookie debut against since they're also not a good football team. Why throw him out there against tough teams like the Cowboys, Chiefs, and Chargers when a less-than-stellar team is only a month out on the schedule?
It also checks out that the Giants wouldn't wait until the bye to make the switch because that's not until the end of the season. The halfway point could also make sense to put Dart out there and that'd be in early November. It's worth noting there, however, that the Giants play the 49ers and Bears in Weeks 9 and 10.
Ultimately, the Giants will have to decide if they think they're underperforming because of Russell Wilson or if it's the entire roster that's holding the team back. You don't want to throw Dart out there just to throw him out there but with Brian Daboll coaching for his job, he might very well end up doing that.
Fans will just have to wait and see how this ultimately pans out.
