The New York Giants’ front office has been surrounded by noise, especially when it comes to general manager Joe Schoen, but the latest from The Athletic's Dan Duggan suggests most of it's exactly that... noise.
There's been an outside belief that Schoen's tenure in East Rutherford was likely over. The arrival of head coach John Harbaugh was supposed to spark an immediate change, leaving the 46-year-old on the outside looking in.
Instead, the post-draft dust has settled, and the much-maligned GM remains firmly in command of the Giants' personnel department. Rumors of his imminent firing have been exaggerated by league outsiders trying to stir the pot. In reality, nothing has changed -- no personnel purges or front-office replacements brought in by Harbaugh.
It has completely flipped the script on pre-draft reporting from New York Daily News insider Pat Leonard, who previously suggested Schoen could be shown the door immediately following the draft. That prediction now looks silly, especially after Duggan's latest comments regarding the front office exec, all but confirming he isn't going anywhere:
"Though there hasn’t been any word on an extension, general manager Joe Schoen seems assured to remain in his position. That’s despite persistent outside speculation — from executives with other teams and agents — that he wouldn’t survive in the new Harbaugh-led organizational structure."
Giants are showing no signs of moving on from Joe Schoen
If the G-Men actually wanted to fire Schoen, they would have done it a long time ago. They certainly wouldn't let a dead man walking tag-team their draft room and hand out millions in free agency to guys like linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, tight end Isaiah Likely, and punter Jordan Stout -- or sign fullback Patrick Ricard to a market-resetting deal.
Harby definitely had a massive say in how things transpired, but Schoen is still a key decision-maker, and the two are working totally fine together.
If John Mara and the Giants' ownership group didn't fully believe in Schoen's vision, they never would have handed him the keys to such a critical 2026 offseason.
Critics who wanted the guy fired certainly had a mountain of evidence on their side. His tenure will forever be stained by the disastrous decision to give Daniel Jones a four-year, $160 million contract extension and also letting franchise icon Saquon Barkley walk straight out the door, down I-95 to the Eagles.
His draft history hasn’t helped either, with misses on guys like Evan Neal, Deonte Banks, and Jalin Hyatt -- none of whom have worked out the way the G-Men needed. Add in an offensive line that struggled to find its footing and a revolving door at kicker, and Schoen’s roster management has left this team feeling shaky way too often.
Unless the 2026 season completely goes off the rails, expect a contract extension for Schoen. He has matched Harbaugh’s aggressive energy stride for stride this offseason. If this seamless collaboration continues, Schoen and Harbaugh might evolve from a forced marriage into the league's next powerhouse couple.
