The New York Giants need a quarterback. That’s not news. What is news is that general manager Joe Schoen is making it very clear he’s about to flip over every dang rock, boulder, and pebble to find one.
Speaking at the NFL Combine, Schoen didn’t sugarcoat things: “We’re gonna look at vets, we’re gonna look at the draft, we’re gonna look at trade candidates. We’re gonna look under every rock to find the best prospect for us going into the ‘25 season.”
Schoen said the Giants will “look under every rock” for a quarterback and explore every avenue. If they draft a young QB, he would like to pair him with a veteran to show him how to be a pro.

Translation? He knows he’s out of time. There’s no waiting to see how things play out. No we like our in-house options. No well, maybe we’ll give Tommy DeVito another shot. No. The Giants need to land their next franchise quarterback, or Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll will be out of a job. Period.
Every QB option is on the table… because it has to be
Schoen’s comments aren’t surprising. This is his job. But what is interesting is how aggressive the Giants seem to be willing to get. They’ve been linked to almost every possible quarterback option, including:
- Draft prospects: Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart
- Free agents: Sam Darnold, Justin Fields, Russell Wilson
- Trade candidates: Matthew Stafford
And here’s the thing—Schoen didn’t shut down any of it. Asked about Stafford? “That’s a question for the Rams.” Asked about a veteran signing? “I’m for taking swings at that position.” Asked about the draft? “We’ve got an idea of three to five, six, seven players” in play at No. 3 overall.
If you’re looking for clarity on what the Giants want to do, good luck. The only certainty is that they’re going to do something... anything because, well, they have to.
Schoen’s desperate look-under-every-rock approach makes it clear—he’s not banking on just the draft, just free agency, or just a trade. He’s going to try to go down multiple routes. However, looking under rocks and actually doing something are two different things, and the Giants organization and its fans need answers.
- The Draft Route: Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward are the two obvious names. Both are highly talented but come with question marks. Sanders’ ties to his father (Deion Sanders) could scare teams off, while Ward’s playstyle isn’t exactly a perfect fit for Daboll’s offense. If Schoen believes in one of these guys, he has to pull the trigger.
- The Trade Route: Stafford is the name that won’t go away, and there’s smoke around a potential deal. But does he really want to play for an outdoor team? The idea of Stafford in MetLife in December sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.
- The Free Agency Route: Darnold and Fields are the two most realistic options. Darnold had a career resurgence in Minnesota, but is he worth a Baker Mayfield-level deal (three years, $100 million)? Fields, meanwhile, is younger and cheaper, but he’s never put it all together.
Ultimately, Schoen isn’t just throwing darts at a board—he’s got to hit a bullseye. He doesn’t have the luxury of making another Daniel Jones-level mistake. This is his last shot, and he knows it.
Will he actually make the right call? We’re about to find out. But at least for now, one thing is clear: the Giants are not going to sit back and let this thing play out. They’re going to go get their quarterback—one way or another.
